Which collagen vs gelatin vs protein powder should you be taking?

Becca Crawford

Dear Community,

I would not touch conventional sports powders and the vast majority of the protein powders that have flooded the market in recent years with a 10 foot pole due to the slew of artificial and processed ingredients that they contain. READ THE INGREDIENT LIST AND ASK YOURSELF IF THE INGREDIENTS SOUND NATURAL TO YOU.

The best form of protein is from grass fed or wild muscle meat including the addition of organ meats in your diet. The most abundant protein in our bodies is collagen. Collagen is the primary structural element of our osteo skeletal (bones, muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons), and our hair, skin and nails. Cooking breaks collagen down into gelatin. Gelatin aids in gut health by providing a healthy mucosal lining to the gut wall and heals and seals the gut. Collagen and gelatin are found in abundance in long slow simmered organic bone broth. Hence why this is a staple in our diet. And if you’re an athlete or train hard, you still don’t need to fall victim to the marketing hype surrounding protein powders. Read this blog that I wrote many years ago when I was the Nutrition Coach for the Sydney Roosters and helped them get from the very bottom of the ladder in 2012 to the very top of the ladder 1 year later by changing their diet… and protein powders were not a part of their diet.

If you need additional collagen and gelatin support (as our production of collagen drops dramatically after the age of 25), choose an ultra-clean single ingredient brand of collagen made from grass fed cows. My supplier of choice is Aussie brand Gelatin Australia (no I am not an affiliate nor receive kick backs- I am just a wholesaler and user of their products). Their collagen hydrolysate is made by adding a naturally occurring enzyme to extract collagen from the skin (hide) of pastured cows. It has been hydrolyzed for fast assimilation in the body i.e. made in such a way that the component parts are broken down to be more readily absorbed by the body.

In this 7 minute video I provide an overview of the difference between the 3 collagen powders versus the gelatin powder made by Gelatin Australia, sold at Broth Bar and Larder as this is one of our most FAQ's at Broth Bar & Larder.

I hope you find this video helpful and don’t hesitate to email me with any questions.
